The
Paramedic's Oath
Be it pledged that as a Paramedic
I will honour the physical and juridical laws
of God and man.
I will follow that regime which,
according to my ability and judgement,
I consider to be of benefit to my patients
and shall abstain from whatever is mischievous
Nor shall I suggest any such council
into whatever homes I enter,
I will go into them only for the benefit
of the sick and injured.
Never what I see or hear in the lives of men
will I reveal to anyone.
Unless required to do so by law.
I shall share my medical knowledge
with those who may benefit
from what I have learned,
and I shall serve unselfish and continuously
in order to help those in need.
What is a Paramedic?
He's like any other man,
with colds, worries, bond repayments and unfulfilled
dreams.
But, he stands taller than most men.
When the alarm bell rings, he puts it all on the line,
dedicating himself to the community.
The Paramedic is at once,
the most fortunate and least fortunate of men.
He savors life,
because he has seen too much death.
He is gentle,
because he has seen too much of the awesome power
of the violent forces out of control.
He is responsive to a child's laughter,
because his arms have held too many
small bodies that will never laugh again.
He is a man who appreciates the simple pleasures of life.
Hot coffee, held in frozen, unbending fingers,
the cry of a new born baby.
The comradeship of brave men.
The divine peace and satisfaction
of selfless service and a job well done -
in the name of all men for the greatest good of mankind.
He doesn't wear buttons, wave flags, shouts obscenities,
throw stones or riot strike.
And when he marches, it is to honour a fallen Paramedic,
one who died that another should live.
He doesn't preach the brotherhood of man.
HE LIVES IT.
